DETROIT (WKZO) - They voted in Baghdad and al Kut and KirKuk and in Detroit this weekend. The Embattled nation took one step closer to becoming an independent democracy, as voters filled 325 seats in their new parliament.

There were armed guards at the polling places in Iraq, but it was more subdued in Detroit, which has one of the largest Iraqi populations in the world outside of Iraq. The results may not be available for days.

Thirty-six people were killed in insurgent attacks trying to disrupt the elections. The election is seen as another key piece that democracy has taken hold in Iraq and that the U.S. will be free to remove troops on schedule next year. Voting also took place in California, Illinois, Tennessee, and Washington D.C.
