KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Number of Toyota drivers who report their cars still have acceleration problems after they were “fixed” has now grown to 15. Toyota finds itself waist deep in allegations, and it may be putting the brakes on the recovery in west Michigan.
After seven straight months of positive numbers, there was a dip last month in west Michigan’s industrial productivity. Economist Brian Long says it wasn’t a big dip, but it was a reminder that the economic recovery is not very robust.
Toyota’s problems have given eastern Michigan a boost, helping the Detroit Three sell cars, but hurting on this side of the state, because there are several parts makers who supply Toyota and have plants in this area.
He says the recovery may have looked better than it actually was for the last few months, simply because the numbers were so utterly bad the year before. Now it’s more of an apples to apples comparison.
